Signs of this can be deciphered in Modi setting a new goal post for 2022. But, the next one year will be Narendra Modi’s toughest test yet. He will have to skilfully steer the ship and at the same time control the narrative.
Mukul can at best bring some traction on the ground that will increase BJP's tally by a few seats but The chief minister has an iron grip on the administration and the senior bureaucracy is strongly on her side.
Modi came with a huge bank of goodwill and political capital. In comparison, Rahul has only his family equity to draw upon. While political capital can be generated, legacy has a limited shelf life.
The takeaway for the BJP from Gujarat even in victory would be: Do not do unto yourself what the opposition is not capable of doing unto you.
While it will surely resonate with innate Gujarati pride, the question that will be asked is, did Modi really need to play the ‘ace' for what may at best be regarded as a semi-final match?
